Street Paving & Resurfacing Project Now Underway

The 2026 Paving & Resurfacing Project is currently underway! Notices will be posted onsite in affected areas 24–48 hours before paving or resurfacing work begins to help residents prepare for the upcoming work.

Key Information & Guidelines

1. Traffic and Residential Access: Impacts to traffic and access to residents’ homes are expected to be minimal throughout the project.
2. Approved Street List: Only the streets included on the approved 2026 Paving & Resurfacing list will be resurfaced during this project.
3. Independent Street Survey: The streets selected for resurfacing received survey scores between 55 and 75. Street conditions were evaluated through an independent survey conducted by an outside contractor to help ensure fairness and impartiality in the selection process.
4. No Changes to the Approved List: The street list for the 2026 project is final. No streets will be removed, and no additional streets will be added.
5. Street Selection Process: The Public Works Department does not select the streets included in the resurfacing plan. Therefore, Public Works cannot make changes or exceptions to the approved project list.
6. Street Shoulder Conditions: Following resurfacing, residents may notice a drop-off between the newly resurfaced roadway and the existing shoulder. Over time, the shoulders are expected to gradually settle and recover. 
7. Work Zone Safety: To help ensure the project is completed safely and on schedule, please DO NOT enter marked work areas or approach contractors while work is underway. Interruptions can delay progress and create safety concerns for both residents and workers. OCTOBER 12, 2026: Following a brief pause in operations for early October, contracted service provider Highland Paving has resumed Paving & Resurfacing efforts for the week of October 12, 2026, with the following tentative schedule:

As previously noted, streets will NOT be paved in the order they are listed on the town Website page, as the paving contractor will set their own route, based on which is most efficient. However, notices will be posted in the area where work will begin at least 48 hours ahead of any paving or resurfacing work.

AUGUST 3, 2026: Paving & Resurfacing work began on-schedule during the last week in July.

As of Monday, August 3, The majority of all streets designated for paving and / or resurfacing in the off-island areas has been completed, with only the painting of some speed bumps and streets still remaining.

As previously noted, crews still intend to begin paving the designated on-Island streets just after Labor Day, as traffic begins to ease towards the less busier times. NOTE: Some preparation work may still be done ahead of Labor Day, though this should have minimal impacts on traffic.

ORIGINAL NOTICE

JULY 27, 2026: Usually, until traffic cones are blocking your commute and a roller is, uh, rolling(?) down the street, most people don't think much of a Street Paving Project. Like any good project however, there's a lot more that goes into the preparation, contractor identification, and funding allocation before even a single shovel hits the soil.

However, now there's some good news for patiently awaiting the pavement, as the latest round of Street Paving operations are scheduled to begin later this week!

WHEN & WHERE: Crews will begin work with the mainland streets, and depending on weather, should start paving the on-Island streets by just after Labor Day, conveniently when weekly population sizes begin to diminish. NOTE: Some preparation work may still be done ahead of Labor Day, though this should have minimal impacts on traffic.
