BSRI Nutrition Program

  • When: Mondays - Thursdays: 11:45 AM

  • Registration: Must provide notice of attendance a minimum of 1 business day prior to dining

This hidden gem is the perfect way for islanders to spend with their social circle while making new friends along the way. For those unable to drive, team members can even pick up Oak Island residents who live on Oak Island for a fun filled day at the center. Part of Oak Island Recreation Department, the Community Resource Center works closely with Brunswick Senior Resources to serve as a congregate meal site, while centralized place for islanders to spend time together times that aid in creating community space for seniors. Seniors must be ambulatory and require no assistance to attend (exceptions may be made for those attending with an aid or caregiver).

Challenge your mind, and your friends, at the Oak Island Community Resource Center throughout the week with games such as Rummikub, puzzle building, billiards, BINGO, and more! This self-led opportunity serves as the perfect place for coastal residents to kick back and spend the day with friends and neighbors.

Dine Out

Let’s hit the road as Oak Island Community Resource Center visits local dining destinations both in and around Brunswick County! The perfect outing to kick off any weekend, this program allows participants, ages 60 and older to connect with one another while trying an expanding their taste. Participants must be currently enrolled in the BSRI Nutrition Program and have all liability and medical waivers on file prior to registration.

Kick off your weekend fun with the occasional trip over the bridge at Oak Island Community Center takes participants to visit a variety of nearby destinations. These local trips cover a variety of interests including science, history, shopping, and more! Pre-registration is required, and seats are limited.

About the Community Center

Town of Oak Island’s Community Resource Center is a congregate nutrition program and senior center where individuals 60 and over can come to enjoy a well-balanced hot nutritional meal.

Individuals from Oak Island and the surrounding towns can participate in the programs, you do not have to be a resident; however, if you do not drive and require transportation you must live on the island.

Individuals can also enjoy social / recreation (bingo, Rummikub, etc.) activities while attending the site from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with other special programs listed on the monthly calendar.

FAQs

What is the Community Center?

We are the Town of Oak Island’s Community Center; we are a congregate nutrition program and senior center where individuals 60 and over can come to enjoy a well-balanced hot nutritional meal 4 days a week for a $1.00 suggested donation. The only requirement to receive a meal is one day’s notice so we can order a meal. If someone comes to the center to receive a meal and would like to continue to attend for lunch, paperwork will have to be completed to register and the paperwork is sent to Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., who provides us the meal. You must be ambulatory and require no assistance with ADL’s/IADL’s to attend unless you are coming with an aide or caregiver. Note: special programming takes place on Friday’s

Where is the Community Center Located?

We are located at 102 SE 47th Street, right next to the Town Hall.

Is there a special telephone number to call?

Yes, 910-278-6552, if you call this number, you will reach Sue & Lisa between the hours of 8:00 to 3:30, who will be able to assist.

What about the person who cannot drive to the Community Center?

If you do not drive and require transportation to the center, you must live on the island and fill out a liability waiver prior to being transported to the center.

What if I do not live on Oak Island, can I participate in programs the Community Center offers?

Individuals from Oak Island and the surrounding towns can participate in the programs, you do not have to be a resident; however, again if you do not drive and require transportation you must live on the island.

What else does the Community Center offer?

Individuals can also enjoy some social/recreation (checkers, pool, cards, Rummikub, etc.) while attending the site from 10:00 to 2:00 (we do have special programs that are listed on our monthly calendar). Individuals could come to the site to participate ONLY in the social/recreation programs if they chose but if they want a noon time meal you must register with the center and provide one day’s notice to receive the meal. If you like to participate in any of the programs, you must also call to let us know that you will be joining us.

Is there a charge for the service?

There is no charge; however, individuals are asked to make a voluntary, confidential, suggested donation of $1.00. There are no fees associated with social/recreation programs.

Is there an age requirement for your programs?

Yes, according to the Older Americans Act, 60 and over.
