GENERAL POLICY

For this program to be administered by staff in a fair and equitable manner, the following criteria are established:

  • Only individuals may be honored on a flag (no businesses, groups, or organizations) who are current residents of the Town of Oak Island or related to a current resident of the Town of Oak Island.
  • The honoree(s) may be living or deceased.
  • The honoree(s) may be active, fallen, or retired military.
  • Only one person may be honored on a single flag.
  • Up to 24 in Veterans Park and up to 24 flags in Middleton Park will be placed the previous day, the day of and the day after the following: Memorial Day, Labor Day, September 11, and Veterans Day; and July 1-5 for July 4.
    • The first flag at Veterans Park entrance is Flag 1 and goes through to flag 24 at the last one on the Intracoastal Waterway.
    • The flag located near the playground is flag number 1 at Middleton Park and goes through to flag 24 located closest to the stage.
    • The honorees selected and their flag position and park will be decided entirely by a lottery conducted by the Recreation Advisory Board. The flag position and park will be announced before each drawing.
  • Fees paid for a flag entitle ownership to the donor, once the agreed upon time that the Town will possess the flag has come to an end. The Town will retain possession of the Flag during that time and is not responsible for any damage or vandalism while being displayed in the park(s).
  • Town staff shall retain final approval authority of Flag wording. Wording of a provocative nature (such as profanity), advertisements, and political statements will not be permitted.
  • Volunteers will set out the Flags and take them back up and they will be stored at a location determined by Town of Oak Island Staff.
