Speed & Traffic Data

Traffic monitoring and response throughout the Town of Oak Island's incorporated limits are divided into three Patrol Zones, consisting of:

• ZONE 1: 40th Street > West (including the Midway Shopping Center)
• ZONE 2: 40th Street > 79th Street
• ZONE 3: 79th Street > East (including South Harbour Village, Jetport, and other mainland areas) 

Vehicle Accidents 

From January 1 - December 31, 2024, a total of 215 traffic accidents occurred throughout the Town's THREE Traffic Zones, with 95 in parking lots and beach accesses.

Accidents by Traffic Zones include:

• TOTAL: 215

Traffic Citations 

A total of 4,261 Traffic Stops were performed resulting, in citations, charges, or warnings for:

• 996 Speeding
• 258 Revoked / No Driver’s License
• 168 Seatbelt / Child Seat
• 46 Stop Sign
• 23  DWI Arrests
• 413 Expired Registration
• 7 Inspection Violation
• 21 Unsafe Movement
• 30 No Insurance
• 19 Failure to Reduce Speed
• 15 Other Traffic-Related violations
• 1537 Verbal / Written warnings

From January 1 - December 31, 2023, a total of 240 traffic accidents occurred with 74 (30.8%) in parking lots.

The Oak Island Police Department uses multiple mobile radar units to help record and prevent instances of speeding in residential and commercial areas.

The units include a SpeedAlert 18 model from All Traffic Solutions. It features a 30"x20" easy-to-read full matrix display, which registers and displays the speed of all approaching vehicles.

The unit is rotationally deployed at multiple locations throughout Town, or in specific areas where concerns of speeding have been expressed.

The Mission of the Traffic Calming Program is to improve community safety and to preserve and enhance Town of Oak Island neighborhoods/subdivisions by working with residents and businesses to implement viable solutions to the negative impacts of automobile traffic on neighborhood/subdivision streets. 

The Traffic Calming Program is implemented in two phases:  

1. Citizen Request & Town Evaluation
2. Citizen Petition & Town Implementation of Approved Traffic Calming Measure(s)

The Traffic Calming Policy was originally implemented in 2022, and most recently updated in October, 2023, using criteria from NCDOT's Guidelines for Traffic Calming Devices and the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
