Kayak Rentals
NOTE: Kayaks are currently unavailable for rent while the Tidalwaves Kayak Launch is being replaced.
Once available to rent:
- There must be 2 staff onsite to assist with Kayak Rentals. Please call the Rec Center before arriving to ensure that is the case. (910) 278-5518
- Kayaks are not reserved ahead of time. They are on a first come, first served basis.
- Renters must view Oak Island tide charts. Kayaks can only be rented only 2 hours before & after high tide. Annual Published Tide Tables
- Kayaks are available for 4-hour blocks only.
- Users must be 12 years of age or older, to occupy their own vessel.
- Kayaks must not leave Oak Island.
Kayak Rental Fees
- Deposit: $50.00 (Refundable if all equipment is returned in the same condition it left in. This MUST be paid in cash or by check).
- Resident: $25.00 / 4 hours
- Visitors: $50.00 / 4 hours
- Residency is determined by a Town of Oak Island address with the renter’s name on an ID, bill, lease or deed.
Beach Wheelchair Rentals
NOTICE: To accommodate rising maintenance and replacement costs, starting January 1, 2027 daily rentals for Beach Wheelchairs will cost $10 / day for residents and $13 / day for visitors, in addition to the $50 non-refundable deposit.
Through grant funding and community donation, Oak Island Parks & Recreation is able to offer the use of Beach Wheelchairs to residents and visitors. These specially constructed chairs feature corrosion-resistant construction, and large, inflated tires specifically designed to tread on the top of the sand. Some chairs float, and can even be used in the water.
Online rental is NOT available for Beach Wheelchairs. Rentals are only available directly from the Oak Island Recreation Center at 3003 E Oak Island Drive, by calling 910-278-5518. or visiting in person
Beach Wheelchair Rental Information
- Beach Wheelchairs are in high demand - It is strongly advised to make reservations as soon as possible
- Beach Wheelchairs must stay on the island portion of Town
- Beach Wheelchairs can be rented for up to 2 days from April - September, and up to 7 days from October - March
- A $50 CASH only deposit is required for late fees or broken and missing parts
- Currently, there are 3 wheelchairs that break down and 4 wheelchairs that do not break down. The renter will be responsible for having a vehicle that can accommodate the size of the chair.
- The wheelchair must be rinsed clean each time it leaves the beach to protect the tires from the sand and salt water.
- Tires must be inflated to no more than 2.5 psi if air is added
- Pick up is on the day the rental begins at 10:00 AM from the Recreation Center at 3003 E Oak Island Drive.
- Drop off is on the day the rental ends, between 5:45 AM - 9:00 AM, Monday - Friday and 9:00 AM - 9:15 AM on Saturdays
- Verification required During pick-up, a driver's license of the renter is needed along with the address where the chair will stay on the Island and the license plate number of the vehicle that will be transporting it
Gym Memberships
The gym at Oak Island Recreation Center features a wide range of fitness equipment, available to Oak Island residents and visitors alike. The gym provides cardio equipment, free weights, weight machines, and is open 6 days a week.
Residents Rates:
- Daily: $5
- Weekly:$17
- Monthly: $25
- Yearly: $250
Visitor Rates:
- Daily: $10
- Weekly: $35
- Monthly: $50
- Yearly: $450
Memberships for the gym do not include fitness classes, and all Members must be 16 years of age or older (under 18 requires an Activity Waiver to be signed in-person by a parent or legal guardian).
