General Statement of Duties

Leads and performs responsible semi-skilled and unskilled work leading a crew and performing daily golf course operations and maintenance, such as mowing, seeding, pesticide application, aeration, and other duties of greens, fairways, roughs, sand bunkers, and tee boxes at the Town of Oak Island Par 3 course.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

The employee serves as manager and participates in the work of the crew, operating equipment as needed. The employee determines chemical usage, selection of turf varieties, and irrigation and other efficient and effective maintenance methodology. The employee identifies equipment and supply needs and provides training, quality assurance, and technical guidance to permanent and seasonal staff. The employee may also be utilized in the maintenance and supply needs of other Town-owned properties and parks. The employee is subject to hazards in turf maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection of the golf course. Some independent judgement is exercised.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Provides crew leadership including work assignments, performance coaching, training and orientation of new staff and on-the-job training, quality control of work, and ensuring the safety of the crew and the public.

• Leads and participates with maintenance staff in the daily set up and maintenance of golf course tee boxes, fairways, greens, pin placements, sand bunkers, roughs, golf carts, water coolers, and other golf course accouterments.

• Coordinates and implements short- and long-term course and turf management including planting, seeding, irrigation, chemical application, beautification, maintenance, and repair activities.

• Operates and maintains electronic irrigation system; performs preventive maintenance and repair to the irrigation system.

• Monitors assigned budget, purchases supplies, chemicals, tools and equipment.

• Coordinates and participates in maintenance and minor repair of small to medium equipment.

• Instructs employees in the proper work procedures, hazards, and safety precautions; provides feedback and quality assurance.

• Leads and participates in activities such as mowing, aeration of greens, top dressing, verticutting, over-seeding, re-sprigging or turf replacement, chemical applications, irrigation system maintenance and use, installation of plants, moving pins and tee boxes, and other general course and equipment maintenance. 

• Operates a variety of light and medium equipment in various course maintenance activities such as mowers and tractors with various attachments, trimmers, and aerators.

• Prepares a variety of records and simple reports of crew work activities.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in golf course maintenance and operation.

• Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with grounds maintenance and repair.

• Knowledge of turf maintenance, including types of soils, grasses, and pesticide and herbicide applications.

• Some knowledge of personnel, budgeting and purchasing policies and procedures.

• Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and tools.

• Ability to assign and lead the work of other employees and to train them in proper work and safety methods and procedures.

• Working knowledge of requirements, and related state and federal environmental laws.

• Ability to trouble-shoot turf management and repair problems and take effective remediation actions.

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

• Ability to work independently and without close supervision.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with golfers, other employees and management.

• Ability to maintain records of work activities and prepare simple reports.


Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, reaching, handing, grasping, walking, lifting, and hearing. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to fifty pounds of force occasionally; twenty pounds of force frequently; and ten pounds of force constantly. Must possess visual acuity to operate construction equipment in a safe and accurate manner and to complete records and reports.


Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from a technical or community college with a degree in turf management or closely related area and some experience in turf management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Requirement

Possession of a Public Operators Turf and Ornamental Pesticide License or the ability to obtain in time frame determined by the Town.

Possession of a valid North Carolina's Driver’s License.
