Speed Limit Change Request Notice

During the Regular Meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Oak Island Town Council voted to submit a request to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for a speed limit change on a portion of E Oak Island Drive, which would LOWER the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph in the area from SE 19th St to SE 38th St.

Additionally, this request would also include a RESTRICTION on the use of Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) in this area, keeping the portion of E Oak Island Drive where LSVs are allowed to all parts EAST of 38th St.

IMPORTANT: As of this notice, the speed limit has not been changed. If this request is approved by NCDOT, adequate public notice and traffic signage alerting to the new change will be provided well in advance.

Currently a definitive timeline on when NCDOT will be able to evaluate and decide on this request is not available, however, full details and NCDOT decision updates will be provided on this notice.
