"Why is that 'GOLF CART' driving on the Beach!?!" It's a question the members of Oak Island's Beach Safety Division get asked from time to time, and as of this month, it's one whose answer is getting an update.
During this month's Regular Meeting, the Town Council approved updates to Ordinance Ch. 28 - Art. II, which allows individuals with a qualifying mobility impairment to legally operate an approved Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) or electric golf cart as a Mobility Device on certain Town Streets and be driven onto the beach at certain designated Beach Access Locations.
With this update, the number designated access locations has been increased, with locations changed to provide a more even spread of beach access throughout the entire Town. This change also provides more direct language, reminding Mobility Device users that they must park as close as possible to the Beach Access pathway, while still providing the required distance for Emergency Vehicle Access, Sea Turtles Nesting, and the base of the dunes. Additionally, Mobility Devices must be used for direct beach access only, and cannot be driven along the beach, to other Beach Access Locations, or around The Point.
