Heat Safety Notice Graphic

The month of July is kicking off with many outdoor activities in the Town of Oak Island and surrounding areas, including Beach Day on July 1 and the NC 4th of July Festival in neighboring Southport.

In addition to the games, music, and fireworks displays, EXTREME HEAT will also be a big part of the remaining week ahead. With dangerously hot temperatures and humidity forecast to bring a heat index greater than 105°  the Oak Island Fire Department offers the following reminders:

REMEMBER TO:

  • Drink plenty of WATER, and avoid alcoholic beverages
  • Apply SUNSCREEN of SPF 30 or higher every two hours
  • WEAR lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
  • Stay in the SHADE as much as possible.
  • PLEASE keep PETS and SMALL CHILDREN off the sand during the heat of the day.

Most importantly, if you or someone around you is starting to experience signs of Heat Stroke, including throbbing headache, confusion, slurred speech, and rapid, strong pulse, don’t wait until it’s too lateCall 9-1-1 immediately!

Fire Chief Lee Price offers these reminders in a short, helpful video provided below. To share this video with others, just visit OakIslandNC.gov/HEAT.
