Curb Dumping

"Curb Alert!" It's the common phrase used to quickly tell others about items being given away for free, which have been left by the curb. Word gets around, and usually these items find a second life by the end of the afternoon.
But what about items nobody wants? The stranger's yard debris, the streetside couches, or even the occasional ditch-mattress? What becomes of these not-so-natural wonders?

Through enforcement of Town Ordinance Section 24 the Code Enforcement Division is working hard to clean up some myths and misuse of the Curbside Collection Services!
Provided below are helpful reminders on what is, and is not provided by Curbside Collection in the Town of Oak Island.
Yard Debris
Yard Debris is collected by the Public Works Department, and should only consist of leaves, clippings, and small sticks only generated by typical yardwork.
- Yard debris must be placed in the right-of-way, free from obstructions such as mailboxes, signs, or limbs, at the beginning of the scheduled collection week. Once a Town collection trucks pass through an area, they will not return until the next cycle.
- Place leaves and grass in one pile. Do not bag leaves or grass.
- Brush and limbs must be smaller than six (6) inches in diameter, and placed in a separate pile.
- Do not mix any garbage or other materials with yard debris. The Town will not collect yard debris in bags or mixed piles.
- Yard debris must be placed on the right-of-way in front of your residence, not an adjacent lot.
- Debris pickup is not provided for landscaping companies or tree services.
- The Town will not collect yard debris generated by lot clearing, demolition or new construction
Bulk Items
Curbside collection of garbage and recycling carts is performed by the Town's contracted service provider, GFL Environmental. Collection services are provided for the carts only; as GFL is not required to collect items placed in the right-of-way or beside the carts.
Such "Bulk Items" like furniture, appliances, electronics, and other large items placed beside the street will not be collected. These items must be disposed of at the Town's Disposal Convenience Site, or at one of the locations provided by Brunswick County.
Enforcement
Code Enforcement staff are working to review these ordinance violations, and issue citations for illegal dumping of yard debris and large items discarded in the public right-of-way.
