General Statement of Duties

The fundamental reason for the existence of this classification is to participate in fire suppression, prevention, emergency medical services and rescue activities in protecting life, property, and the environment, and complete related work as required. Work is performed under direct supervision of an assigned Captain or Fire Officer.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class serves as a member of a crew responding to fire calls, disaster calls and emergency medical calls, administering medical stabilization to patients in the field and studying and training methods and techniques for firefighting, hazardous materials handling, and emergency medical care. Work includes using operating emergency equipment, putting out fires and / or mitigating other disasters, applying necessary first aid to sick or injured persons, and participating in maintenance of station equipment and quarters. Work is frequently performed in hazardous conditions, requiring rapid response and strenuous physical exertion. Duties assigned to employees in this class may vary according to the needs of the department and/ or equitable allocation of workload. Tact, courtesy, and firmness are required in dealing with the public, always maintaining proper customer service, and remembering the customer is the reason we are here. Work and performance are evaluated by a combination of the employees’ ability to conduct essential job functions, continuing acquisition of new knowledge and skills and support of these essential job functions and ability to demonstrate the competencies described within.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Maintain high morale with all personnel.
  • Knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of firefighting and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of Basic and Advanced Life Support protocols and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of modern methods of attacking fire emergencies and the use and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of incident response including response to structure and vehicle fires.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials, general rescue techniques and technical rescue techniques.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, and other town staff.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency medical calls as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic functions of climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than 100 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 50 lbs. of force frequently. Must possess visual acuity to size up the color, volume, an extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus and emergency situations, to observe and diagnose medical emergencies, and to prepare reports and records.

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in the fire service. 
  • Firefighter level II certification 
  • North Carolina Office of EMS Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or greater certification. 
  • North Carolina Hazardous Materials Level I Certification. 

Required Courses within timeframe established by the Fire Chief (within 6 months)

  • North Carolina Class B driver’s license.
  • North Carolina Driver Operator Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD)
