WELCOME to THE CURRENT, the weekly digital newsletter for the Town of Oak Island.

It's the final week of February, and following a weekend of fun and revelry with another successful Mardi Gras By The Sea, we're ready to let the Sun go down on Winter and look forward to an upcoming Spring Fling or two.

Speaking of the Sun going down, special credit to Contributing Artist: Kelly Barker, for providing this week's cover photo, Sunset In OKI. As a reminder, you can view all of the community-submitted photos and artwork, and learn how to contribute one of your own by visiting the new Contributions page at OakIslandNC.gov/PICS.

Once you've checked out the Mardi Gras photos, and browsed the amazing art on the Contributions page, make sure to suit up for a full swim through the rest of this week's edition of The CURRENT.

Outside Agency Funding Deadline Approaching

As a reminder, the deadline for submitting Outside Agency Funding Applications is fast approaching on Friday, March 13, 2026

It is a top priority for the Town of Oak Island is to ensure that all tax dollars are used in the best possible manner for the benefit of our citizens. To help achieve this, recent updates have been made to the qualifications and requirements for specific programs to receive provided funds. These updates have replaced the previous funding methods for general nonprofit services and operations.

The purpose of this policy is to promote partnerships between the Town of Oak Island and non-profit agencies for the benefit of Oak Island residents, to equitably and efficiently allocate resources to strengthen agencies, and to provide sound and clear methods for decisions.

The updated Outside Agency Funding Application requires an Agency Mission Statement, Key Accomplishments, Goals, Objectives, and information on the specific program(s) for which the agency is requesting funds, and how it aligns with the Town’s Strategic Plan.

Applications for Fiscal Year 2026 / 2027, which include the Funding Policy, are now available. and are DUE by the close of business on Friday, March 13, 2026. To download an application, simply click the link below

Safety Brief

Leadership Lessons

This past Friday, February 20, Police Chief Charlie Morris was honored to join Southport Police Chief Todd Coring and participate in the Columbus County Quarterly Leadership Meeting, held at the historic Vineland Station Depot in Whiteville, NC.

Photos Courtesy Whiteville Police Dept.

Together, the neighboring Chiefs shared personal experiences and insights learned during response to the mass shooting incident that occurred in Southport in September of 2025. During the discussion, they noted how "Leadership starts before an incident occurs." Having good mutual aid partnerships requires a working relationship between neighboring agencies, as well as the state and federal agencies (as in this case, the nearby U.S. Coast Guard).

Most importantly, communication is the key to ensuring those relationships continue to work properly. That includes properly communicating with other agencies on what they need, and communicating within your own agency to ensure the wellness of officers after a traumatic response.

Chief Morris would like to sincerely thank the leadership and officers of the Whiteville Police Department, as well as the fellow participants for the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences.
