General Statement of Duties

Performs Ocean Rescue, Beach Patrol and EMS response. Primary job duties include roving patrols on 

Beach Strand, public education on Rip Current Flag System, and providing EMS care for sick or injured 

patients.

 


Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class participates in the rescue of people in need of assistance in the ocean or 

other bodies of water, performs water rescue, emergency medical life support, and other incident 

response. The work schedule is a seasonal hourly schedule to be set by the Fire Chief. The typical 

schedule consists of Monday through Sunday from 9:00 to 5:00 but hours may be altered or increased

as the need arises. The employee shares responsibility for driving UTV, QRV or water rescue craft. The 

employee will participate in training for increased proficiency. Work is performed under stressful 

emergency conditions and involves personal hazards. The employee is also subject to OSHA standards 

on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through 

observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality of work completed. 


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Participates in incident response, responding to water rescue emergencies on and around the 

ocean, canals, waterways, and beachfront. 

• Provides responses to emergency medical calls and administers emergency medical care 

which may include basic life support such as CPR, airway management, bandaging wounds, 

immobilizing broken bones, controlling hemorrhaging, defibrillation, suctioning, and oxygen 

administration. Preferred applicants will have EMT certification (not a requirement).

• Assists with the preparation of rescue and medical response reports.

• Participates inspecial projects as required as well astraining to maintain or enhance skills.

• Performs related duties as required.


Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of swimming, climbing, balancing, stooping, 

kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. 

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than one hundred pounds of force 

occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or up to twenty pounds of force 

constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity to observe and diagnose medical emergencies, 

and to prepare records and reports. Daily activity can include sprints, running in sand for distances up 

to a mile and swimming for distances of 500 meters in open water. Athletic skills will be challenged on 

a regular basis


Required Education, Certifications and Experience

Must be at least 18 years old and possess excellent swimming skills. 

NCOEMS EMT-Basic or higher certification (EMT preferred but not required)

All required certifications will be provided through the Training Division.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
