WELCOME to THE CURRENT, the weekly digital newsletter for the Town of Oak Island.

Although the start of Spring isn't officially until the end of next week, you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise, thanks to the longer hours of Daylight Savings Time and warmer temperatures felt over the past weekend!

Why, it's almost enough to make you want to grab a kayak and Ride The Tide on the Davis Canal, just as pictured in this week's cover photo contributed by Angie Knoll! Reminder, you can view ALL photo and art contributions for the Town Website at OakIslandNC.gov/PICS.

While the air is warming up nicely, that water is still a little chilly. So maybe don't put away the wetsuit just yet, because there's plenty of Town News & Events to cover as we take a dive into this week's edition of The CURRENT.

Water Tower Painting Notice

Starting on Monday, March 9, 2026, work will begin to repaint the Oak Island Water Tower located at 406 Trott Street.

Water-Tower-Painting-Notice.jpg

This work is part of the regular maintenance schedule for the Tower, and although no full street closures are expected, some intermittent street closures and traffic interruptions are possible in the immediate area.

This project, and all associated closures are anticipated to last approximately four (4) weeks.

During this time, all non-essential travel through the area should be avoided, even if no closures are in place. To help ensure the safety of both residents and contractors working onsite, drivers and pedestrians, especially those walking pets through the area, should use caution and remain aware of the surrounding work environment.

NEW Crosswalk Completed

This past Thursday, March 5, the Commercial Area Sidewalk Improvement Project: Phase I officially came to an end with the successful inspection and opening of the NEW NCDOT approved Pedestrian Crosswalk across E Oak Island Dr. at NE 51st St.

This new lighted crosswalk joins the more than 1,700 linear feet of NEW sidewalk added added in Phase I to the north side of E Oak Island Drive between NE 46th St. and NE 56th St.

Looking ahead, the Town anticipates to finalize the details for Phase II in late June of this year, which will further extend the sidewalk from NE 56th St. to NE 59th St., and add an additional crosswalk at 58th St. A later Phase III is also in the works, which will add a new traffic signal with crosswalk at 79th St.

Spring Cleaning Reminders

The sun comes out, the weather warms up, and the windows open ... all welcome signs of Spring! However, with the added light of longer days comes the added waste that results from Spring Cleaning! In keeping with seasonal tradition, the Public Works Department offers some helpful reminders on how to best dispose of your more "unconventional" items.

The most important reminder being the Town DOES NOT offer curbside removal of bulk, "brown & white" goods such as furniture or appliances. While the local wildlife may appreciate a fancy curbside couch or mattress to live in, we can assure you your neighbors won't! The good news however, is that residents can dispose of these items and more for FREE at the Town's Disposal Convenience Site, located at 4110 Airport Road.

As for Yard Waste removal, including grass clippings, leaves, or brush and limbs not greater than six (6) inches in diameter, these items are NOT accepted at the Disposal Convenience Site, but ARE collected through regularly scheduled curbside service.

To view the collection schedules and guidelines for Yard Waste or Garbage & Recycling collection, just visit the Garbage & Recycling Information page at OakIslandNC.gov/GARBAGE or click the link below.

Final Notice: Funding Applications Due This Week

As a Final reminder, the deadline for Outside Agency Funding Applications for area non-profit groups working to benefit Oak Island residents is THIS Friday, March 13, 2026.

It is a top priority for the Town of Oak Island is to ensure that all tax dollars are used in the best possible manner for the benefit of our citizens. To help achieve this, recent updates have been made to the qualifications and requirements for specific programs to receive provided funds. These updates have replaced the previous funding methods for general nonprofit services and operations.

The purpose of this policy is to promote partnerships between the Town of Oak Island and non-profit agencies for the benefit of Oak Island residents, to equitably and efficiently allocate resources to strengthen agencies, and to provide sound and clear methods for decisions.

The updated Outside Agency Funding Application requires an Agency Mission Statement, Key Accomplishments, Goals, Objectives, and information on the specific program(s) for which the agency is requesting funds, and how it aligns with the Town’s Strategic Plan. To download an application, simply click the link below.

Safety Brief

E-Bikes Safety & Reminders

One sure sign of Spring (and warmer weather in general) is the increase in the overall number of people; not just on the beaches, but all throughout Town, including the streets and sidewalks. One way to cruise the streets in the sun that is quickly growing in popularity is electric bicycles.

E-Bikes have revolutionized the commuting and travel experience in many communities, and Oak Island is certainly no exception! That's why the Oak Island Police Department is working to ramp up our messaging for E-Bike Safety and Ordinance Awareness concerns.

Remember, just because it has pedals, doesn’t mean it’s a bicycle. Using N.C.G.S. 20-4.01, E-Bikes and similar vehicles can have multiple classifications ranging from Electric Assist Bicycles, to Mopeds or even Motorcycles.

Electric Assist Bicycles are specifically classified as "having two or three wheels with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, with a maximum speed no greater than 20 mph." Bikes with higher power ratings or faster speeds go into the mopeds and motorcycles categories, where DMV registration, insurance, and other laws apply.

Standard bicycle laws apply for Electric Assist, meaning they CAN be driven on any public street throughout Town, but they CANNOT be driven on sidewalks or the Davis Canal Pedestrian Walkovers, as well as the public beach strand (NOTE: Town Ordinance 28-5 also restricts similar recreational devices such as scooters, Onewheels, skateboards, and unicycles).

Regardless of what you ride, the main thing to remember is SAFETY! Always wear the proper safety gear, including a certified helmet and appropriate clothing. When out riding, make sure to remain aware of your surroundings and look out for both vehicles and pedestrians. Even if you are in a situation where you have the right-of-way, do not assume other drivers will see you; try to be visible so that your intentions are known to others on the road.

Whether your bicycle is powered by electric batteries or burning carbs, we just want to ensure you arrive at your destination safely! To view and share more information on E-Bikes in Oak Island, just click the E-Bikes tab on the Police Department page at OakIslandNC.gov/PD or click the link below.

Beach Safety Spots Filling Up

One more reminder, only a few available positions remain for Ocean Rescue Unit's upcoming 2026 Season. If you're interested, get ready to Dive Into Your Calling and join the Oak Island Fire Department's most premiere division!

Working as part of the Beach Safety Division, the Ocean Rescue Unit is a challenging, yet highly rewarding service to the community. Training, uniforms, and equipment are provided for these hourly, seasonal positions, with pay rates starting at $20.50 per hour.

Participating in the ORU is a great way for seasoned first responders to use their experience in a non-competitive, part-time environment; or equally beneficial for learning life-saving skills that can help to build a future career.

The 2026 Rescue Academy training for these positions start in April, so be sure to submit your applications SOON! Just visit the Job Opportunities page at OakIslandNC.gov/JOBS or click the link below.
