Pedestrian Safety
The Town of Oak Island is continually working to improve access and safety for pedestrian use, and becoming a more "walkable" town.
Town management and staff are working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, to receive approval and installation of multiple new sidewalks & crosswalks.
Project Updates
E Oak Island Drive Sidewalk & Signal Crossing Project
Important: East Oak Island Drive is a state-maintained roadway; any further improvements or modifications must be thoroughly reviewed, approved, and administered by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) before they can be implemented.
- A new sidewalk has been approved for the north side of E Oak Island Drive, between NE 46th St an NE 56th St. (north side)
- A signal crossing will also be installed at the intersection with 51st St - consisting of a three sided cross with painted walks on the north, south and east side
- Final design specs have been approved by NCDOT following their review earlier in 2025
- NCDOT was previously bid the project, though no bid was awarded. The project has since been re-bid with bid opening scheduled for August 14, 2025.
- Once a bid has been awarded, Town staff will meet with selected contractor to establish a new estimated completion date
